Where to ask for asylium?

Where?

You may apply for asylium at the border of the Republic of Lithuania, city or district police institucion or at Foreigner Registration centre (at Pabrade, Švenčionys district).

Illegal Migration

If you are seeking for asylium in the Republic of Lithuania and you've just come to the country or you're here illegally (without a visa of the Republic of Lithuania and/or any valid travel document), you must apply with request for asylium immediately.

Otherwise, by the order of the laws of the Republic of Lithuania, you may get the liability of illegal arival to the Republic of Lithuania or illegal stay in the Republic of Lithuania. When applying for asylium in the Republic of Lithuania, list the reasons why you think you should be granted with refuge. 

Interviewing the Refugees

After applying for asylium you will be interviewed by competent personell. If there is a need for an interpreter, express it immediately. It is necessary to inform your interviewer, if you're in need of a lawyer or if you or someone who arrived with you is in urgent need of medical or any other help. In addition you will be able to contact a lawyer personally by the telephone numbers of the Lithuanian Red Cross organisation.

During the interview you will have to present all of your documents and travel tickets in possession, report your personal data, indicate the motives for applying for asylium and your itinerary. Only one European Union state can be responsible for granting you with asylium, so Migration Departament will perform an investigation to determine a country, responsible for the research of your request for asylium.

If you are older than 14 years old, your fingerprints will be taken. In 48 hours from applying for asylium Migration Departament will come to a decision for conferment temporary territorial asylium while your application is being determined or while an European Union state responsible for your application will be determined. 

If Migration departament will decide not to grant you with territorial asylium, you can appeal to Vilnius District Administrative court in 14 days from the decision. If you can't dwell in the Republic of Lithuania on your own finance or if you are in the Republic of Lithuania illegally, you will be  settled at Foreigner Registration centre in Pabradė, Švenčionys district.

Help while Waiting for a Decision

While the application for refuge in the Republic of Lithuania is being determined, a person has the right to:

• Settle down in Foreigner Registration centre and use it's facilities gratuitously;
• regulate and form documents, concerned with your application for asylium in the Republic of Lithuania for free;
• use state's ensured juridical help;
• contact with the lithuanian representatives of The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at any time;
• receive a compensation for using public transport;
• use the services on an interpreter for free;
• receive a necessary medical aid for free;
• receive a monthly allowance for small expense.
